Opening Speech 2008

Mr. President of the General Assembly, Secretaries General, Mr. Flittiger, Distinguished Guests and, as usual, a warm welcome to you, delegates.

Yet another speaker, although you hopefully feel that you have heard enough. You have, almost, and the real show is about to start,........ your show.

As the Vice chairman I speak to you on behalf of the MUNOL Association. The Association was founded in 2003 by some former MUNOLers, who felt that what their MUNOL particiapation had given them should not be lost. Their intention was:

These, may I say, decent ------- aims we still pursue today. Over the years, from being students of this very school you are visiting today, form being supporters of the idea of a world in which the Nations are united, we have grown to bein the actual organizers of the Conference. Almost all of those persons running around with the ---------- coloured badges are members of the Association.(By the way, we don’t bite, just talk to us and ask us anything....well almost anything.....don’t be shy.)

The Association’s relationship with the Thomas-Mann-School can in no way be better compared as a marriage. MUNOL can’t do without the school. The very foundations of the conference lie here and it is the support of the teachers, students and parents that make this event possible. On the other hand – and I hope I don’t go too far by saying that, Mr. Flittiger, – the school can’t do without MUNOL either. This conference has grown to be more than a simple UN simulation. It is part of this city’s cultural diversity. The number of students participating, steadily over 300, the level of internationality reached every year and the effort put in by you,... delegates, is greater than that of many other Model United Nation’s. That may sound cheesy,... but it is the truth.

Over the last year, Christian Kreuder-Sonnen, the Association’s Chairman and I have, together with all the other members, developped the Rules of Procedure for this event. These rules include everything you need to know about the formal part of the conference. So it is not a wish but an urge: Read them. Seriously. Do it.

The creation process of the Rules made two things precisely clear:

Number 1: We simulate the United Nations while adapting and changing the official Rules of Procedure. Whenever you feel that the discussions are interrupted due to formalities, have in mind that we already took out a majority of formal procedures. We fitted what was necessary into MUNOL format.

Number 2: Dress codes, formal procedures, limited debating time, points and motions – all these instruments exist to form a basis that helps nations with all kinds of social, ethnic and religious backgrounds to come together and discuss fundamental problems.

Always know that the aim is a better world of tomorrow. And that surely doesn’t start with anarchy in the committees.

Let me close by telling you one thing. We as organizers have dealt with guestspeakers from countries all over the world. We had the honour to host the United States Consul General, an official from the German Federal Foreign Office, Consul Generals from Australia, Finland, Switzerland, Cyprus and Brazil. The list is close to endless, but the point is:

I know that some of you sit here an think: "Well, we do this simulation thing and we talk about more or less important issues of present-day politics and we don’t have to go to school for being here and then there are all these flags and all these boring speakers who think they have the most important things to say, and dude, where are we going to go ...again... to have a beer tonight?"

The thing is though., and now listen up once more carefully...all these Consuls and ambassadors are humans like you and me. What you do by participating in MUNOL is not so far off from what they do. Their positions, and their way of using power will one day be replaced.....by us. (I’m not that much older, that’s why I said "us".) Seriously, we are next. The tough part here is: we have to take responsibility. You delegates take the first step by being here and showing interest.

The outcome of the committee work is completely and absolutely open.

Open to you. Open to your effort. See that as a chance. It's your Conference. The framework was set by the organizers. But they are done now. It’s about what you make of it.

Sehr geehrter Herr Dr. Zuckermayer,
Sehr geehrter Herr Sünnenwold,
meine Damen und Herren,

MUNOL bekommt einen Preis, und dies zum ersten Male. Wir, die aktuellen und ehemaligen Organisatoren, die Thomas-Mann-Schule, und nicht zuletzt der nun gemeinnützige MUNOL e.V., sind froh. Wir sind glücklich, dass unsere jahrelange ehrenamtliche Arbeit direkte Früchte trägt. Dass eine ausschließlich von Schülern organisierte und durchgeführte Konferenz die Würdigung der Loge zur Weltkugel erhält, zeigt uns, dass wir den richtigen Weg gehen.

Mein Name ist Axel Benrath und ich spreche zu Ihnen als Vertreter des Vorstands des MUNOL e.V., des gemeinnützigen Vereins, der seit diesem Jahr nun offiziell Träger der Konferenz ist. In engster Zusammenarbeit mit der Thomas-Mann-Schule sind alle Organisatoren Mitglied im Verein und verwenden ihre jeweiligen Kapzitäten, in dem uns möglichen Rahmen MUNOL besser und jedes Jahr wieder besuchenswert zu machen.

Aber lassen Sie mich kurz etwas zu MUNOL sagen, auch wenn alle Anwesenden natürlich – mehr oder weniger – über MUNOL wissen. Das Model United Nations Of Lübeck findet seinen Ursprung im Jahre 1997, als ein Schüler der TMS die Idee aus Den Haag in unsere Hansestadt holt. Von der ersten Konferenz mit 50 Delegierten, die alle von der TMS kamen, und drei Tagen voller Debatten in einigen wenigen Committees und begrenzten Räumlichkeiten ist an dieser Stelle zu berichten. Und da ich sie nicht mit blanker Historie langweilen will, noch eins: Wir haben in den vier Jahren konstant über 300 Delegierte aus bis zu 9 europäischen Ländern zu Gast gehabt. Das ist eine rasante Entwicklung innerhalb von nun 11 Jahren.

Es gab einige Zweifel, freuen wir uns doch noch immer über den seit zwei Jahren vorhandenen MUNOL-eigenen Drucker, der für uns eine große Anschaffung war. Doch wird Ihnen auch deutlich geworden sein, dass wir trotz dieser verhältnismäßig kleinen Freuden weder zu unterschätzen noch aus Lübecks kultureller Landschaft wegzudenken sind.

Wir simulieren die Vereinten Nationen mit 15-20jährigen Schülern. Dieses Projekt ist an sich schon deshalb bewundernswert, weil es von Schülern während der Schulzeit, in den Ferien und bisweilen auch während der Abiturzeit – neudeutsch – gemanaged wird. Doch jedes Jahr erneut finden wir wieder junge Menschen, einige von ihnen sind heute unter uns, die diese internationale Verknüpfung fortführen wollen. Und das, weil sie „Menschen der verschiedensten Weltanschauungen und religiösen Überzeugungen im Bewußtsein verbindender Werte [...] zusammenschließen“ wollen. Für all jene, denen diese Worte nicht bekannt vorkommen: Sie stammen aus den Leitgedanken der Freimaurerloge „Zur Weltkugel“ in Lübeck. Wir als Verein, der der Träger der Konferenz ist, zusammen mit der Thomas-Mann-Schule, die als Europaschule offen und unterstützend das MUNOL-geschehen fördert, und jeder einzelne aus dem Organisationteam machen uns für diese Worte stark. Doch mehr, wir füllen sie mit Taten. Und ich hoffe dass es genau dieses ist, wofür wir diese Würdigung heute entgegennehmen dürfen.

Natürlich wäre dies nicht möglich gewesen ohne die Unterstützung der TMS, hier namentlich Frau Kohfeldt, der ehemaligen Direktorin und dem jetzigen School headmaster Herrn Flittiger, der es nach der Übernahme des Direktorenamtes nie an Unterstützung hat mangeln lassen.

Herrn Sünnenwold und Herrn Saxe als Vertreter der Stadt möchte ich für die kontinuierliche Unterstützung über all die Jahre besonders danken.

Was bleibt ist, Ihnen Herrn Dr. Zuckermayer und der gesamten Loge für ideellen und finanziellen – wieder neudeutsch – support ausgiebigst zu danken.

Wir sind abhängig von dieser Art Unterstützung und freuen uns in naher wie ferner Zukunft auf gute Freundschaft innerhalb und außerhalb unserer Stadtgrenzen. Bleiben sie uns gewogen!
